LIBERTARIANS TO PROTEST BUSINESS CLOSURES & SHELTER-IN-PLACE ORDERS

ORANGE COUNTY, CA -- The Libertarian Party of California has unanimously passed a resolution opposing mandatory, state and local shelter-in-place orders. Libertarians across the state will be engaging in peaceful protests against California’s mandatory business closures and stay-at-home orders.

The resolution reads, in part, “By restricting access to commerce, the governments in California have directly restricted access to earnings and employment…”; it goes on to reference disproportionate impacts on low-income and at-risk individuals.

There have been reports in the media about protests on May 1st, in Huntington Beach and Laguna Beach, involving mainly conservative groups. However, libertarian groups will also be in attendance. “Libertarians will be among the groups protesting in Orange County,” said David Naranjo, Chair of the Libertarian Party of Orange County, “and we're encouraging people to be considerate and to exercise sound judgement—social distancing and face masks help protect everyone.”

Mr. Naranjo continued, “For Libertarians, the issue is government overreach and choice: politicians are restricting people’s liberties and arbitrarily deciding which jobs and businesses are deemed ‘essential.' They have little or no regard for the devastating effects their policies have on the lives and livelihoods of millions of Californians. The public should be informed and given choices—people will voluntarily protect themselves and their families, and frequent businesses that keep customers and employees safe.”

Mimi Robson, Chair of the Libertarian Party of California, said, “It takes political courage to propose that ordinary people will rise to the occasion in a crisis, but history reveals that they always do. The truth is more people act responsibly than not when a crisis evolves.”
