Vote NO on Measure Q & Measure W

The Executive Committee of the Libertarian Party of Orange County has voted to oppose Measure Q and Measure W, which will be on the November 3, 2020 General Election ballot in Costa Mesa and La Habra. While the Libertarian Party supports legalization of the retail sale of cannabis—which is why we support Laguna Woods' Measure V—these measures impose heavy taxes and restrictions on cannabis businesses.
When California legalized cannabis cultivation and sales, many politicians expected a windfall of taxes from the cannabis industry as a way to shore up their budgets. The reality is that tax revenues have fallen short of estimates, onerous taxes and regulations have boosted the black market in cannabis, and licensed cannabis businesses struggle to stay open. These measures are an attempt to do what other cities in California have already tried to do: tax their way out of their fiscal woes on the backs of local cannabis businesses.
The Libertarian Party of Orange County opposes Measure Q and Measure W due to the heavy taxes the measures impose on cannabis businesses and the excessive restrictions on those businesses.
